So today was Election Day. It was a pretty routine day. I went to work and turned on the computer. I loaded MSN to get the scoop. I would've watched it on TV with the rest of the Americans except the fact that the time difference made it time to be at work, not just finishing and that even if I could've watched a TV there is a good chance that it would be in Korean.
Anyway, so I am following all day long, on the computer pretty much any chance I get I check the race...Around 2 o'clock here they were already posting the concession speech from McCain, which is about 11pm or midnight at home. But this is still pretty early in the race. It isn't technically official...
While I am watching the polls I am also watching with the 3 other Americans here. It baffles me though how much all the other teachers here care too...The Canadians, which I sorta get, they are close to us and all...but the Korean teachers as well. They were really excited that Obama was doing so well.
Anyway, I guess I was just suprised that anyone except the Americans (and maybe the Canadians) cared...but then I go to my 2:40 class to teach and the first thing one of the kids says to me is "Teacher, on news it is Obama is King". Granted the grammar is incorrect and King, really? But this kid is 7 or 8 years old. I'm not even sure American students that age know about the election...but in Korea? I mean I knew they were smart here and that they frequently watched the news, I just thought that it was Korean news. Not to mention the fact that this was shortly after the rest of the world found out...I mean it may be a little more understandable if he told me tomorrow or the next day, but like an hour after the fact? I was blown away...
All I can say is that I hope all the feelings I have about Obama are incorrect and that this will be the best 4 or 8 years with a democrat in office...God Bless America, we sure as hell need it.

Just out of curiosity, what are you fearful that Obama will do to negatively impact this country and/or the world?

Maggie, really it is just a personal feeling that I have about him... Not what he says or how he looks, just a general feeling, can't describe it. I don't think that he will do anything to impact US/world on purpose but his even being elected has already caused quite a stir and so far it is positive, I can only hope that it stays that way...

On another note, Kevin just randomly said "She's got a butt minus". Remember when Jon was briefly obsessed with that commercial?? Ahh... the memories...

Glad you can still be optimistic about Obama. I'm not happy he won, but I feel that he is the 'king' of my country, so he will have my support and respect. With a democratic president and democratic congress (although not a phibuster preventing majority) it should be no problem to do all those things that were promised in the election. If change is really in the wind, I am hoping for a good change and proof that all America needs is democrats in control! :)
It's been a pretty rough week for me, my students did great on the MAP test last spring. Instead of being placed in the top ten they have basically thrown out the all the 10th grade math scores. Really long story I will have to share later. Retirement is looking really good right now. :(

Oh Wow! That is hilarious Lenz. I am just imagining Koren kindergartners being excited that "Obama is king." It sounds like something out of the movie "The King and I." Oh dear, your adventures keep me entertained in dreary ol' Kirksville. I can't believe you are going to Thailand...actually I can! I really want to try a persimmion...do you think HyVee sells them? Maybe WalMart! Love you and miss you!

Follow up on my quest to find a persimmion. So I walked in HyVee a day or two after I left the wall post. Lo and behold there was a persimmion BAM! right next to the bananas waiting for me. One was bright red and the others were a oarnge color. I asked the old lady standing next to me which one I should get. She said the "ripened" red one even though it looked quite a bit different than the rest. Old ladies know everything about picking produce right? You see them all the time squeezing cantalopes in the grocery store. So I took her advice. WRONG! I bit into it a couple day later and instanly spit it out. It left a grainy feeling in my mouth that didn't go away for awhile. So...moral of the story- don't trust others for produce picks and go to Korea for persimmions. :)Oh school? Ech, it's been a easier year than last year. I've had some fun, but anxiously awaiting "moving on."
